The scent of chickens wafting through the air

Dina,

Lately our chicks' droppings seem to smell stronger than ever. Is it my imagination, or is this something that happens as they grow? We are also seeing some stronger looking, feathered out legs. The girls fly to the top of the feeders and perch there to peer at us. They seem to really want to get out of the box. Is it time for the kibble yet?

wet flooring!!!!! Please help!!!!!

Hello Dina----
I just set up a new box yesterday for the chicks, lining it with newspapers and fresh shavings and it is already wet on the bottom of the box!!!!!! The chicks have dug through the shavings, shredded the newspapers and now the box bottom is saturated with water. This probably cannot be too healthy for the chicks. Should I get a piece of plywood for the floor of the box? I guess I'm just wondering the best way to keep the floor dry. Thank you.

flooring

Jennnifer,

A week and a half ago we switched to one of those big plastic storage bins. It doesn't keep the chicks from messing everything up -- but it makes it easier to clean and the water doesn't seep through onto our floor. Maybe that would work for you.

kibble update

Dina,

I have now used the last of the feed and just have the bag of kibble left. Can I use that, or do I need to pick up more feed? I also will need more shavings soon.

Most often when the shavings

Most often when the shavings get wet it is because the drinker is not level. As it perfectly level. Fill it up, put it on a block to raise the height of it a bit, and watch it for a minute to make sure it is not slowly seeping/spilling over one edge.

I think we are right on

I think we are right on track for your comments: the chicks are ending their chickhood and moving into their adolescence which means they are getting big quickly ( bigger stinks, bigger messes, bigger appetites, the whole works!) I think it will help to have them in as big a box as your room can handle comfortably and raise up the feeder and drinker on blocks as they grow. I will send out a general email with a few thoughts on all this. But it sounds like you are right on track.

It is NOT yet time to switch them to the pellets. If you need more chick feed come by the farm and we will restock.
